The start of the session, we went through with program to complete, going through what the objective is today, why we're doing this in relation to Matt's goal and what the program entails of exercises. The session starts where Matt begins each exercises and I observe his form, mentally noting down any cues that might be of interest. When working on the bench press, I went through how he should be stable from his lower body because during the warm up sets, there was jerking motions occurring when he locked out at the end of the rep. So after the set, I spoke to Matt of the jerking and showed him how his feet and lower body should be. Talking him through setting up the initial phase of the bench press, going though cues such as bracing the body from arching your back first, having a strong, flat foot position before moving the barbell out to begin the exercises. Eventually as we progress with each exercises, in between sets is where we have a debrief to discuss the exercises in detail where Matt can improve in.
Another is when we conduct the incline dumbbell press, we debrief on his form where both his wrists were flaring out and Matt was letting the dumbbells drop at a faster rate then what's expected. So during the exercises, I was going through the cues I notice and made him aware. He made it aware at the start where the set was awful and that he shouldn't have went heavy with 25kg to start the exercise. So I spoke to him to drop the weight to a level where he can confidently do the dumbbell press while improving his form for reps of ten. Even performing the exercises, I'll talk him through how slow and low he should be dropping the dumbbells where I'll even place my hand to make Matt aware that this is the height he should be at.
he session with Matt, I feel like he benefitted a lot from the session. During the session, we talked about how he likes to improve his form a lot and what he can do to improve. I feel like the coaching style I've shown was a mixture of Styles B, F and the new addition of Style I: Player Designed - Coach Supported. Treating this as a personal training session in relation to the spectrum of sports coaching, myself as the coach, I'm providing feedback to Matt when he needs feedback to know if he's developing. The session is solely for him to perform independently but to also use myself as an insurance to know that he's on the right track for his development.
I probably felt like I could have been more clearer in my explanation to Matt on the form changes on the exercises. That way they can be concise so Matt remains engaged during the session. The session was great. Matt was constantly talking to me in between sets which was good. This could be mean that he was engaged and focus on improving his form and quality of training. There are times where I should have used Style B to demonstrate the exercises as opposed to providing feedback to Matt. I could have gave Matt a visual example of how the exercise should be performed to the standard need. Whilst the feedback was beneficial, showing Matt how the exercises is performed might have been more effective in getting what I want to say across.
